I absolutely adore the rich sweet flavor that comes from slowly cooking onion slices in olive oil until the slices are browned, tender and caramelized. Caramelized onions pretty much enhance the flavor of anything, from burgers to stews, so why not hummus?!?!
It’s very easy to caramelize onions, but following these steps will give you perfect savory, but sweet onions every time.
-
- Slice a yellow or white onion into consistent slices with the same amount of thickness to ensure that the onion slices cook evenly.
- Onions loose a lot of volume during the cooking process, so start off with more than you think you’ll use.
- Cook one onion (sliced) in about 1 tablespoon of olive oil at medium heat for about 40ish minutes, stirring around every couple of minutes.
- Mix in fresh herbs for different flavors.
- Caramelized onions dress up salads, soups, sandwiches, burgers, pizza, dips, potatoes, eggs and so much more.
Simple Mills did not sponsor this post, but I have to mention my love for these crackers. If you haven’t tried them, please go out and buy them asap. Simple Mills’ products are all paleo, gluten-free and vegan friendly. Next up, I’ll be whipping up their banana muffins or maybe the chocolate cake. 😉
This dip is sweet and savory at the same time, and so satisfying. Plus, it’s healthy, gluten free and vegan. Can I just tell you how insanely delicious this hummus is? It’s:
Creamy
Sweet
Savory
Altogether satisfying
Light and healthy
What more could you ask for in a dip?
I have also served it with crusty bread, which I highly recommend. This hummus and bread were meant to be together. However, it’s also super tasty with crackers, raw veggies and even chips.
This makes such a great app to bring to any parties or social gatherings. It’s vegan and gluten free and is absolutely sensational. Even picky eaters will love it. (Not to mention, it would be a lovely sandwich spread the day after with its creamy texture.)

Something to think about….
Do you have a favorite hummus flavor? Have you ever tried making homemade hummus?
Yum!! Just made it and can’t wait to have it with dinner tonight!! ?
Instead of oil, I just used vegetable broth while caramelizing the onions but everything else I kept the same.
So darn good! It’s a keeper recipe!
Ohhh… I love that idea! So glad you love!
This is so delicious! I am so pleased I found this recipe and your site. I have been purchasing Caramelized Onion Hummus from the supermarket, but never again! This is so easy to put together. I added a little more lemon, but that is just personal preference (love the taste of lemon). Thank you so much! I am looking forward to trying more of your recipes.
Yay! I love hearing that! So glad you enjoyed and thanks for your comment!
Can I use Tahini paste instead of the tahini seeds?
Yes and I updated the recipe to make that a little more clear.
Very much wanted to print the recipe for caramelised onion huprmmus but your print button would not work.
Hmmm… I just checked it out and it’s working fine for me. It may be the internet browser you are using. Possibly try a different one.
Can you use a red(purple) onion
I think that would work just fine, it may just have more of a spicy taste.
Don’t kill me…I LOVE those crackers, ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEM and bought 2 boxes last week for the first time (same flavor)……….the problem? With Weight Watchers they are 5 points per serving (which is higher for a cracker, especially since most people eat more than a traditional “serving”) and they are CRAZY HIGH in sodium. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE them but have to avoid them.
I totally feel ya! Ha! I’m going to be avoiding them too because I can’t stop once I get started. 🙂
Wow! Two of my favorite foods! This rocks, thanks a bunch.
Kol Toov (all good things)
Thanks, Marnie! Hope you get a chance to give it a try!
This looks so delicious!

Thanks so much! It’s pretty tasty!
Ah, thanks! Have you ever used the 21 Salute Seasoning from Trader Joe’s? I’m guessing I could use that too? I have that seasoning, and haven’t tried it on anything yet. 🙂
Yes, 21 Salute Seasoning is very good, but I don’t think it has any salt added to it. You should definitely try the Chile Lime and Everyday Seasoning, those are favorites of mine.
This looks so good! What did you sprinkle on top of your hummus? It looks so pretty!
Thanks so much, Deanna! It’s a new seasoning from Trader Joe’s called Everything but the Bagel Sesame Seasoning Blend.
