Ingredients you’ll need

One of the best parts about this pita pizza recipe is that it only requires a handful of simple ingredients. I’m listing the ingredients I use to make them Greek-inspired, but read through the ‘variations and substitutions’ section for other topping ideas.

Pitas near bowls of pizza sauce, shredded cheese, black olives, artichokes and sliced red onion.
  • Pitas: Pita bread is a fantastic blank canvas for personalized pizzas. It becomes perfectly crisp in the oven, so it can hold up to any of your favorite toppings.
  • Sauce: Pick your favorite prepared sauce like pizza sauce or marinara sauce.
  • Cheese: The ultimate cheese for a pizza is shredded mozzarella. It’s ooey-gooey, melty perfection.
  • Roasted red peppers: Adds delicious sweet and smoky flavor.
  • Artichokes: If you’re a fan of artichoke hearts, you will love the nutty, yet sweet taste they add.
  • Red onion: I love adding some thinly sliced red onion to my pizza because they’re a bit sweet, crunchy and sharp. Plus, they provide gorgeous color!
  • Olives: You can omit the olives if you’re not a fan, but I love to add either kalamata olives or black olives for briny flavor.
  • To garnish: For extra deliciousness, sprinkle on some crumbled feta cheese or grated parmesan cheese, chopped fresh basil or fresh parsley and red pepper flakes.

Variations and substitutions

Pita pizzas are super easy to customize! Here are some ideas to get you thinking:

  • For the crust: Feel free to switch out the pitas for flatbread or naan.
  • Sauce: As an alternative to tomato sauce, try Alfredo sauce, pesto or hummus.
  • Cheese: Other cheese varieties that work great on pizza are provolone, cheddar, fontina, gouda or pepper jack cheese.
  • Other toppings: Get creative! Whether it’s bell peppers, mushrooms or pineapple, you can use any toppings you like.
  • Add meat: While these make a great vegetarian meal, feel free to add meat like pepperoni slices, sausage, ham or bacon.

How to make this recipe

This Greek pita pizza recipe is all about simplicity and enjoying homemade pizza without the fuss! Here’s how:

Using a spoon to spread pizza sauce over a pita.

Step 1 Prep: Preheat oven to 450ºF with a pizza stone, if you have one. Spread desired amount of marinara sauce over pitas.

Step 2 Add toppings: Evenly distribute all desired toppings evenly over the pita pizzas. For Greek pizzas, begin with shredded mozzarella, followed by roasted red pepper, artichoke, red onion, olives and lastly, the feta or parmesan cheese.

Baked pita pizzas on a pizza stone near a pizza cutter.

Step 3 Bake: Place pizzas on a pizza stone or directly on the oven racks, placing a baking sheet underneath to catch any drips. Bake 5 to 10 minutes until crispy and the cheese is melted.

Step 4 Garnish and serve: Transfer pizzas to a cutting board and sprinkle with torn fresh basil and parmesan cheese, if desired. I sprinkled mine with red pepper flakes, too. Slice and serve!

Helpful tips

  • To make these extra crispy: Purchase the thinnest pita breads you can find, and pre-toast them for a few minutes in a 400ºF oven before adding the toppings.
  • Use quality ingredients: While this recipe is all about simplicity, using high-quality marinara sauce, fresh mozzarella cheese, and premium toppings can elevate the overall taste of your pizzas.
  • Don’t add too much sauce: A little sauce goes a long way. Using too much sauce can make the pitas soggy.
  • Watch the baking time: Using a timer is key. Cheese on pizzas can go from perfectly melted to overly browned quickly.

Frequently asked questions

What can I use instead of pitas?

English muffins, French bread, flatbread or naan bread are all great substitutes for pitas. The key is to select a base that suits your taste and can hold your favorite toppings. You can even use mini pizza crusts!

What are the best toppings for pita pizzas?

These Greek toppings are super tasty, but you can really use any toppings you like best. I do recommend thinly sliced or diced toppings, and firm vegetables should be sautéed before adding them to the pizzas to ensure they don’t make the pizza soggy and also cook through completely in the oven.

What should I serve with pita pizzas?

If you’d like to make this a complete meal with something on the side, I’d suggest a fresh green salad like a greek salad or this family-favorite Italian salad.

Storing and reheating

  • Storing leftovers: Pita pizzas are best enjoyed the day they are made, but you can store them in an airtight storage container or bag in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • To reheat: Gently rewarm pizzas on a baking sheet in the oven at 350 degrees F until hot.
