My family has quite a few Christmas traditions, from baking and decorating cut-out sugar cookies and Christmas morning brunch to our annual trip to see a Christmas show. All are quite special, but my favorite is loading up in the car with our cups full of hot cocoa (and coffee for me), plenty of homemade chex mix, our favorite Christmas cookies and dressed appropriately in our festive holiday PJs to scout out Christmas lights around town.

We have such a blast every year checking off items from out printable Christmas Light Scavenger Hunt (get yours below!). And the gingerbread hot cocoa makes it all the more special! Moments like these are what the holidays are all about. Our holiday traditions are what makes me so excited about this time of year. If you don’t currently have a Christmas tradition with your family, you should SERIOUSLY consider a Christmas Light Scavenger Hunt. My kids get SO excited about it! Below is a picture of my son on one of our outings from a couple of years back. Yes, he’s now driving us on our little adventure!

Gingerbread Hot Cocoa (Naturally Sweetened)

Warm, cozy, delicious and completely dairy-free + naturally sweetened!

Ingredients

• 1 ¼ cups milk*
• 1 teaspoon molasses
• 2 teaspoons unsweetened cocoa powder
• 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
• 1/8 teaspoon ground ginger
• 1/8 teaspoon allspice
• 1 packet stevia or other sweetener, (optional)
• whipped cream and/or marshmallows, (for serving)

Instructions 

• Pour milk into a glass microwave safe measuring cup or large mug.
• Add all other ingredients and heat for about 1 minute in microwave at high power. Stir and continue heating in 30 second intervals, stirring after each, until desired temperature. Top with fresh whipped cream and/or marshmallows and serve.

Notes

*Use dairy-free milk for vegan. I like using unsweetened vanilla almond or cashew milk.
